CALIFORNIA, CIGARETTES AND PRISONS: Ban smoking, not tobacco September 5, 2004
On Jan. 26, the California Assembly passed a bill that would ban all tobacco products in state prisons (AB 384). According to sponsor Tim Leslie, R-Tahoe City, the bill "is a win, win, win for California." But the ban may be a loser for everyone else concerned, including prisoners, staff and the prison system. According to Leslie, about 80,000 California prisoners smoke. At 120,000 packs per day and $3 a pack, prison sales of cigarettes in California is worth $131 million.

Imperial Tobacco on track to match targets Source: Edinburgh Evening News,2004-09-21
IMPERIAL Tobacco, maker of Lambert & Butler cigarettes, is on track to meet its full-year expectations despite a "challenging" German market. The world’s fourth-biggest cigarette firm pointed to a 12 per cent slump in German cigarette market volumes in the year to August. It said its cigarette market share "declined slightly" following tax rises in March, but had grown month on month since April, up to a 19 per cent share in August. Imperial acquired Germany’s number two player, Reemtsma (Davidoff cigarettes maker), in 2002, giving it greater geographic spread, but also making it reliant for a fifth of its profits from Germany just as the government there moved to push up excise duties on cigarettes.
